The sun room is zooming its way into existence. Today, the guys added rafters. The picture is the view from above, via a window in the new laundry room.
Bud and I picked up his new-to-us rototiller this afternoon. It didn't run quite right when he tried it out this evening, but he's not upset at all. It was used and is probably a couple of decades old. But this is the model he wanted because it's so solidly built, and his bid was low -- so he'll be grinning all the way to the small-engine repair shop tomorrow.
Laura and Lance got to visit this morning. This was the last full day Lance will have to wear casts for his club feet. Tomorrow, it's off with the casts and on with special shoes.

Day 237: April 29, 2008
New plan in the sun room. This time it was Gary's idea. I swear.
We're getting a vaulted ceiling and skylights. I'm excited.
And as you can see in the photo, the walls are already framed.
We're also excited because there is tape and mud on the walls in the existing house! Oddly, a few sections still need to be hung, though.
Bud bought a rototiller on eBay today to replace the one that finally bit the dust last week. He'd owned the old one for years (in fact, he bought it used), and it had been slowly falling apart for the past couple of gardening seasons.

Day 236: April 28, 2008
The guys continued to work on the deck today, Jimmy's birthday. Never caught sight of the drywallers, though.
Gary apparently fell off the deck Friday afternoon, injuring his wrist and ankle. He's OK now, he says.
Laura and Lance visited the office briefly this afternoon. Lance had just gotten up from a nap and wasn't as sunny as usual, a feeling
I understand completely. Waking up blows.

Day 235: April 27, 2008
While I slept the morning away, Bud was out early to snap some pictures of Norfolk Southern's Derby train as it headed to Louisville.
We continued to shuffle things from one storage spot to another this afternoon, which is always more of a project than it sounds like it might be. Bud also mowed and washed his car.
Now we're hitting up TiVo for a little drag racing. A good weekend all around -- but too short, as usual.

Day 234: April 26, 2008
Early in the afternoon, we gave the tour to my sister, Linda, and her friend Gail. (Gail's actually -- um, let's see -- Linda's ex-cousin-in-law? LOL. She's the ex-wife of Linda's husband's cousin.)
To continue our trash woes, when Bud and I stopped back by the house later in the afternoon, an unfamiliar truck was by the bin, about to come up the drive. The two guys inside told Bud they were checking for scrap metal! (On private property! In broad daylight!)
Nothing seemed to be missing except stuff from the trash, like the lateral file Bud and the guys had to cut into pieces so they could get it down the stairs. And while I'm glad anything the Dumpster divers found probably will be recycled, we're thinking more and more seriously about the seemed-like-overkill gate that's been a joke between us.

Day 233: April 25, 2008
Gary and Jimmy continued working on the deck today.
We're considering hiring turtles to finish the drywall. I think mudding is supposed to start next week -- if the subcontractors don't decide to sit on the front porch and smoke for a few days instead.
Bud planted corn and lima beans this afternoon. We're waiting to put the tomatoes and squash in the ground because it's supposed to be pretty cold in the beginning of next week.

Day 232: April 24, 2008
You'll be happy to know that after much confusion this morning, we have the sun room windows under control. Sounds simple enough, but getting there was tough!
After lunch, the guys got started on the deck. The part that is most complete in this picture will become the floor of the sun room. (You can barely see above it that the great-room roof isn't finished there. That's where the sun-room roof will attach to the rest of the addition.)
Bud said the guys plan to build the sun room entirely before they move on to the rest of the deck.
Tonight, Bud and I visited the traveling Vietnam Veterans Memorial. (Ironically, as many times as we've been to D.C., I've never been able to get close to the real Wall. It's always been crazy-crowded because of Rolling Thunder and Memorial Day.)
I can't begin to fathom the loss of life that memorial represents. I always tell Bud I'm shocked that anyone in his age range is actually still alive.
