The bathroom lighting fixtures arrived yesterday -- like the great-room ceiling fan, they're from Minka. Aren't they beautiful? I'm a sucker for mosaic.

Then I found out today that we'll need a light in the hallway that leads to the downstairs bathroom, so we ordered the matching ceiling fixture. I saw it for the first time a couple of weeks ago and had been trying to think of a use for it ever since -- so that worked out pretty well.

Carl, the HVAC subcontractor, and his crew were at the house today placing vents and returns in the addition. And Bud successfully tested the garage sound system.

The owner of the Amish furniture place called back this morning about the vanity tops. He said I ordered the closest thing to white carrara they offer. (And apparently they only sell cultured marble, which explains why the tops weren't natural.)

So we'll order the correct vanity tops locally. But if you happen to know anyone who needs an ivory cultured marble top with single center sink (in 49 inches or 55 inches), just let me know. LOL.

Happy Leap Day!

We met with Harold, the tile subcontractor, this morning. I think everything's decided now, except what to do with the back stairs, which lead from the soon-to-be laundry room to the new downstairs bathroom. We hadn't thought about them at all, really.

My first suggestion was that we'd cover them in the same tile that will go in both those rooms. Everyone else seemed to think that might be too slippery, so we're going to talk with the wood flooring guy too.

Gary and Jimmy started framing the upstairs shower, and they installed another window in the great room.

Bud's aunt Frances' art supplies have a new owner who'll love them just as much. Last week, Bud offered them Tom, so that he could give them to his daughter.

When Tom took the brushes and canvases home to her earlier this week, she sent us these beautiful tulips as a thank-you gift. We're planning to find a special place for the bulbs when we're finally in the house.

Today, Jesse wired the garage for speakers. Progress on all the usual stuff continued. I think the plumbers will be around sometime soon.

Day 174: Feb. 26, 2008

Even though we won't be ready for cabinets for at least another month, it feels like things are moving fast. I think it's because we're making so many decisions right now that we'll have to live with every day -- tile, paint, lighting.

Jesse continued wiring today, including speaker wire for surround sound in the great room. Upstairs, Gary and Jimmy started framing the area for the tub. And of course, the wallpaper kept falling.

Gary said we're supposed to meet Wednesday morning with Harold, the tile subcontractor. But Bud and I haven't heard from him yet.

At the house, there are the still-going-ons:
-Bud and Tom are moving furniture out of the house
-Jesse is roughing in wiring
-Robert and the rest of the painting crew are removing wallpaper

And there are the in-discussions:
-We may take down the big pine between the addition and the garage after all. Bud and I have been mildly worried about what we would do if it died (since we're making some big deck modifications to accommodate it), and now Gary says we can't pour a patio footer without damaging a major root.
-Jesse says if we're installing a second water heater anyway, we should put it upstairs -- so we won't have to wait an eternity for hot water on the second floor.

Gary changed our ready-for-cabinets date from March 15 to the beginning of April. Disappointing, but not entirely unexpected. There's not a speck of drywall up yet (although I heard that the subcontractor stopped by today). Heck, we're still missing windows and doors.

I found a paint color for the kitchen and great room. The master bedroom is still a mystery, though. A shopping trip for new bedding could be very inspiring, don't you think?

The amount of stuff, interesting and otherwise, this house has accumulated in the past 80 years is practically unbearable.

As we empty more rooms of furniture, the house seems smaller and the task of moving everything out seems more impossible.

On Sunday, Bud and I moved the furniture from his dad's bedroom -- first downstairs to the front hall and then out of the house entirely. After that, a nap was in order. We'd feel so much closer to finished if we could ever run out of things to move down those stairs!

Saturday, we stopped at the tile place before the Kentucky game to return some sample boards and check out a couple more, which Bud graciously agreed to take back Monday while I work. (Turns out this tile shop is actually open half-days on Saturdays. Or at least it was this past Saturday. Love that.)

A difficult decision right now is paint for the kitchen and great room -- because the mix of color in the batch of slate tile we actually receive will determine whether the paint looks great or mismatched. I'm wondering if the kitchen tile can be laid before the walls are painted in the addition.

Right now, we're planning to paint most of the house "toasted almond," with departures in the bathrooms, the kitchen/great room, and possibly the master bedroom.

Early this afternoon, we met with Michelle, the tile designer, and I think we made some final decisions about the bathrooms.

We uncovered a huge problem when we got home and started comparing tile samples to the vanities, though. I ordered the wrong color vanity tops!

I don't know what I was thinking, but I obviously didn't think it for long -- because I was positive those tops were white carrara. But they're ivory, which presents more problems than I have room to tell you about. It's a stressful thing.

Anyway, more wallpaper came down while we were gone. And it looks like Gary and Jimmy continued to work in the upstairs bathroom.

The photo's one that should have gone with yesterday's post -- the door and some of the windows in the great room.

Gary, Jimmy and I met with Jesse, the electrician, again this morning. He's going to start roughing in wiring either tomorrow or Monday, depending on the weather.

Gary and Jimmy installed some of the windows and doors in the great room this morning. I don't have pictures because, even after more than five months, I never remember to take the camera when I stop by the house! So the photo's from yesterday -- of the chipboarded fireplace.

This afternoon, Bud and I ordered the disposal and a cool push-button switch for it that installs on the countertop. I'm kind of excited about that.

It seems like the wallpaper's practically falling off the walls it's coming down so fast now, which means I'm extra-hoping to get away from work early tomorrow to help move furniture.

But I'm stressed about bathroom choices right now, so I'd actually like to spend tomorrow afternoon looking at tile. Why can't tile places be open on the weekends?

Tuesday was a jumble of no sleep and lots of work, followed by a late basketball game -- which, fortunately, Kentucky was able to win. So I didn't even try to post, and I didn't have pictures anyway.

Wednesday morning, we met with Bryan again. He took some more measurements. We gave him a deposit. Now all that's left is actually getting the cabinets. (Well, and paying the other half of the bill.) I can't wait to see them.

Gary and Jimmy have added chipboard to the fireplace and leveled the ceiling in the upstairs bathroom since my previous post. I'm sure that's not all, but it is all I remember right now.

The painting subcontractors took over wallpaper removal, and it seems to be moving faster. The hard part is that their speed puts pressure on us -- mostly Bud -- to clear out furniture more quickly. I'm hoping to get away from work Friday to help. This has turned into one of those (frequent) weeks when the harder I try to get out of the office, the larger my to-do pile grows.

The plumber dropped it by today to get it out of his office, where it's been sitting since I chose fixtures in the fall. Usually, he wouldn't even have ordered it yet (and he hasn't ordered anything else, except the tub that we already have), but a plumber friend of his had this high-end sink and offered him a great deal, which he passed along to us. I love our big, square sink!

Bud slaved all day over furniture, framed prints, piles of art supplies and more other stuff that I can list. He has another room nearly cleared out, which is amazing.

Gary and Jimmy framed the hearth this afternoon. They also built the knee wall that Bryan requested for the kitchen island.

Speaking of Bryan, I called him today at Gary and Jimmy's request to set up a specific day and time for our appointment later this week. He'll remeasure a few things, pick up the warming drawer and custom-panel kit, and give us a more up-to-date estimate. I think Gary and Jimmy have a few questions for him also.

Here's another crappy task: Bud and I wore ourselves out trying to move furniture out of Tom's way. Even though we made lots of headway, our progress feels discouragingly small compared to what's left to do. (Particularly when you consider that when we're entirely finished with this house, we'll still only be a third of the way there!) And now poor Bud will have to spend at least a couple of days moving stuff by himself while I go to work.

Yesterday when we stopped by the house on our way back with the furniture, the roofing subcontractor was there. Half the roof is shingled now.

Day 164: Feb. 16, 2008

Our vanities and bed made it here unscathed -- a huge success considering some of the roads we had to navigate. The marble tops are still boxed, so I guess we'll see those for the first time when they're in the bathrooms. I hope they're the right color and unbroken.

I dragged the camera all the way to the furniture place and, of course, took no pictures.

Tomorrow, we'll continue to shuffle furniture to make way for more wallpaper removal.

They also finished leveling the kitchen floor, I think.

Tom continued to remove wallpaper in our future bedroom. He doesn't seem to think the larger wallpaper steamer we rented for him works any better than the one he owns, so I guess he'll go back to using his own when the rental week is over.

We talked briefly to the painting contractor just before lunch, and we'll meet further with him next week. I'm not sure exactly what he'll want to know then, but I've been taking a fresh look at paint chips, just in case.

I called Bryan today. He'll also be by sometime next week to take a few more cabinet measurements and to pick up the warming drawer and its custom-panel kit.

Bud had new tires put on the trailer, so we're all set to pick up our vanities, and to shuffle some other furniture from house to house. Looks like it's going to be a busy weekend.

The plumber called yesterday afternoon, so I finally got to switch the finish on the kitchen faucet from pewter, which I wasn't so sure about anymore, to basic stainless. He gave us some recommendations on disposals too.

The picture shows some of the E-track that Bud installed in the motorcycle trailer. It's kind of an extra-strength key strip. Using those rings, which we can move anywhere on the strip, we can secure things to the walls (like the Amish furniture we're picking up soon or the millions of pieces of furniture we'll be shuffling among houses someday).

Today was our friend Joe's birthday. But he worked all day anyway, which I appreciated because I would have been much, much busier if he hadn't.

It's already sleeting/raining and the temperature's still in the low 20s, so the white stuff may be gone by morning, replaced by piles of cars that couldn't stay on the roads.

Before the snow started in late afternoon, the guys made some progress even though the wind chill was pretty bitter. Gary and Jimmy framed the pantry. Tom started removing wallpaper in the biggest bedroom, which used to belong to Frances, Bud's aunt.

I tried to call Bryan this afternoon to let him know the custom-door kit for the warming drawer had arrived. He's out of the office 'til Friday. I hope I can remember to call him then.

Bud started preparing the motorcycle trailer so that we can use it to haul our vanities and bed back from the Amish place later this week.

Laura says Lance is doing great and is almost finished with his antibiotics. Best news is they've discovered he has feeling is his cute little toes!

We slept late today, recovering from the surround-sound mission yesterday evening, I guess.

This afternoon, we took in a Kentucky win and "Untraceable," both of which we enjoyed. A leisurely Saturday was just what we needed, considering how exhausted we both were last night.

The photo shows part of the storage area above the kitchen. Seeing it like that makes me think of other things we could do with the space. But I know I don't have to convince you how much we need that additional storage.

I forgot to mention that one of the Amish furniture guys called yesterday to let us know the vanities and bed are finished. I think we'll try to pick those up by the end of next week. I can't wait to see them!

In addition to continuing to remove old kitchen flooring, the guys made lots of other visible progress today.

They framed the area where the ductwork will run up the wall between the kitchen and the great room. I think making use of that space for the ductwork will eliminate one of the reasons I thought Bryan would need to remeasure some cabinet dimensions.

They also added additional support to the ceiling above the kitchen, which originally was planned as dead space. Now we'll be able to access it from the second floor for storage.

This evening, Bud worked on designing his surround-sound setup. The whole project wore us both out.

Gary, Jimmy and Tom started removing the old flooring from the kitchen area after lunch. Bud's dad used to call the pantry "the back porch." We've always assumed that's because it was a porch that had been enclosed at some point.

Turns out we were right. The guys got down to a green painted-wood floor there this afternoon.

Weather's still a problem, although our difficulties are much less serious than many others' in the state and much of the Southeast.

We were lucky that the storm system that swept through last night, spawning all sorts of tornadoes, didn't injure us or cause us any property damage.

Mike, the salesman who supplies Gary and Jimmy, worked with Gary and me today to order some doors and windows. The picture shows a multi-window use of the Andersen art glass I chose for the bathrooms. Each bathroom will feature a single 3-foot by 3-foot window.

Here's hoping it's not too windy for roofing tomorrow.

Day 153: Feb. 5, 2008

Rain was the word of the day at our five-month (by the date) mark. Gary and Jimmy were at the house briefly in the morning, 'til the downpour started again.

Bud talked to someone about starting to remove wallpaper. I hope we can keep the floors and remaining furniture safe during the process.

You'd think that among three houses, a garage and a large storage building we'd be able to find another place to keep that furniture for a while. But you'd be wrong -- because your imagination can't take you to the heights of cluttered crowdedness in which we spend our days.

We visited Bryan's cabinet showroom this morning to discuss some final details.

I'm so glad we met with him there instead of the manufacturing facility. Seeing some of his completed work vanquished my lingering doubts about not choosing the most expensive estimate.

Of course, I thought of more things I needed to ask him after we got home and looked over the plans again, so I e-mailed him tonight.

He also talked to Gary this morning about adding an access door from the second floor to the small atticy space over the new kitchen. Gary seemed to think it wouldn't be a problem, which is great because we need every inch of storage we can create.

Tomorrow, we iron out the final details on the kitchen cabinets.
